GBMSL Bantam Girls Select Team 2007

Tournament was August 25th & 26th in Brantford

The GBMSL Bantam Selects came home with a Bronze medal from the 12-team Provincial Women’s Softball Association Select tournament held in Brantford the weekend of August 24th-25th. The Saturday portion of the tournament was made up of 3 team round robin play. GB arrived Saturday morning to be greeted by the 1st of several rain delays. The cancellation of the opening ceremonies and skills contest meant our 1st game was only 2 hrs late.

Their 1st game was against Byron an extremely strong team. GB was up to the task for most of the game however a letdown in the 4th and 5th innings proved to be their undoing. At the end of 7 innings Byron defeated GB 11-6

With their second game postponed until 8:00 pm Saturday night, a trip to the local mall was a great way for the team to spend time together. GB put together a great pitching performance by Morgan excellent defense behind her and a series of timely hits by Danielle, Chelsea, Lizette and Megan to beat the host Brantford team   2-0

At 10:00 am Sunday morning GB was back on the diamond ready to begin the single elimination portion of the tournament. We were greeted by sunshine and a   Brockville team who finished 3rd in the yellow pool. All of the girls must have enjoyed a good night’s rest as they were all hitting, running and scoring runs. Backed by another strong pitching performance from Morgan with relief help from Lizette GB defeated Brockville 15-3

In the quarter-finals GB faced Pickering, who had finished 1st in their pool the day before. Morgan with relief help from Lizette out pitched their counterparts from Pickering. All of the girls kept on hitting. The result was a 15-7 victory for GB and a 3rd game in a row at 2.00 pm

In the semi-finals, GB faced the 2006 Champions from Chatham. GB’s defensive and offensive play was a little flat and Chatham capitalized with strong hitting and fielding. The result was a 16-3 loss for GB. GB was awarded bronze.

In the finals Byron defeated Chatham 5-3

Although the medal was not the color GB had been hoping for at the start of the tournament, the team can be proud of how they played. The coaches seemed particularly proud of the fact that this is a team that never quit. Each player had some spectacular individual highlights throughout the weekend. It must be noted that the other 11 teams have been playing together for 3-5 years and that this was their 4th tournament of the year. All of the girls represented themselves and Georgian Bay with a positive attitude. It made me extremely proud to be a part of this weekend’s tournament
