GBMSL Bantam Select Team 2006

On August 19th,  12 young men from GBMSL's Bantam teams attended the OASA Bantam Ontario Championships in Pickering. The team had only been together to practice and had never really seen a game as a team before so we were really unsure as to how they would perform. In some cases, we didn't even know who could play what position well.

The Team consisted of:

Billy Balkwill- Vasey, Jared Chapman- Victoria Harbour,  Stuart Giffen- Minesing, Zaac Pauze- Lafontaine, Alex McArthur- Victoria Harbour, C.J. Kingsbury- Coldwater, Trevor Breslin- Lafontaine, Jake Marchildon- Lafontaine, Freddie Page- Vasey, Derek Jolie- Victoria Harbour, Nick Graham- Minesing, Scott Brandon- Vasey

Coaches were Vern Jolie and Keith Chapman

In a panic to provide uniforms so that we could compete and look like a team we ordered shirts, wore VH pants and socks and wore GBMSL sponsored ball caps. When we put it all together and saw the look for the first time on Saturday morning, we were pretty much "RED".  We tried to think of a quick name for the team and everything from tomatoes to Red Hot Chili Peppers was tossed around but in the end we were simply known as "GB"

Without question, the team went to work in style. In their round robin games they had to finish in 1st or 2nd position out of 6 teams to move into the finals.

Game 1- GBMSL vs. Downsview- Final Score 19-0

Game 2- GBMSL vs. Orleans- Final Score 20-0

Game 3- GBMSL vs. Bramalea- Final Score 11-2

When the round robin pool was over, we finished 1st in our pool which moved us on to the semi-finals against the 2nd place team in Pool "B".

GBMSL vs. Goodwood- Final Score 12-3

OK, so now we're in the finals and our adventure, which some thought might be over by mid afternoon (shame on you doubters), was moving into the dark under the lights as we came up against the host of the games, Pickering. Pickering was in the same situation as us, undefeated for the day and it was destined to be a challenge.

At the end of the first inning we were down by one run, at the end of 2 innings we were down by 3 but in the 3rd we rallied and brought it back and at the end of the 3rd the score was 8-7 for Pickering. In the 4th inning, Pickering scored their final 3 runs of the game to give them 11. GBMSL remained scoreless in the next 2 innings. However, in the bottom of the final inning, 2 more runs were captured.

Final Score- Pickering 11 and GBMSL 9

It was an awesome game with pitching by Jared, Zaac and C.J. and without question was a well played game by all. Pickering had a solid offensive and defensive team but without question the win was well within our grasp.

On behalf of the GBMSL, we would like to thank our 12 young men on representing us well as ambassadors of our league. There wasn't one issue in regards to sportsmanship in any of the games. Thankyou to all of the parents who committed to this adventure.  We thank you for cheering hard and being there for us. You were a great group to be with and were supportive to the end.
